Hard Hat Object Lesson
Theme: Faith is hoping in something unseen and into the future. A hard hat protects us from future unforeseen danger as our faith give us future hope in God’s promises.
The Jesus fish
The ichthys or ichthus, from the Greek word “fish”, is a symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs, the ends of the right side extending beyond the meeting point so as to resemble the profile of a fish. It was used by early Christians as a secret Christian symbol and now known colloquially as the “sign of the fish” or the “Jesus fish”. (Wikipedia)
Have everyone make the “Jesus Fish” sign on the front of the hard hat.
According to one ancient story, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company. Current bumper-sticker and business-card uses of the fish hearken back to this practice.

At the back of the the helmet have each student put the top arc and then have them pick another person in the room to finish the symbol by drawing the bottom arc.
A helmet gives the wearer some hope of protection. They put the helmet on to protect them from something they can’t see. Unforeseen danger!
HEBREWS Chapter 11
Hebrews 11 talks all about faith. Faith is unseen. It can feel real but faith itself is a bit mysterious.
Have everyone write Hebrews 11 somewhere on the helmet.
Read Hebrews 11: 1-3
Faith is hope. Faith is assurance. Faith is good. Faith is understanding.
Assign up to 5 groups to learn more about faith through a different person in scripture. Tell each group they will need to be able to share something about that person’s faith.
Group 1: Abel – Abel’s faith let him give a sacrifice that was worthy of God.
Group 2: Enoch – Believed in God and had faith in Him. By his faith he was able to please God and it is impossible to please God without faith.
Group 3: Noah – Had faith that allowed him to obey God and thus he and his family were saved.
Group 4: Abraham – Had faith that persuaded him to leave his homeland for another and live in a foreign land trusting God had brought him there for a purpose.
Group 5: Sarah – Had the faith to wait, hope and expect God would give her a child with Abraham.
Verse 13: All of these people died not fully receiving ALL that God had promised them. Get it? They died and still believed God was going to help them and make good on his promise despite that they were at the end of their life waiting.
What gives you faith?
On the inside/outside of the helmet write down all the things that help with your faith in God.
What gives you faith that God is there and that God is helping you and that you are not alone?
People, places, things?
What weakens our faith?
Talk with the people at your table about the things that put faith at risk.
People, places, things?
Hebrews Chapter 12: 1-2
It is because of Jesus that our faith is strengthened! Even more so, because of what Jesus did (died and rose again) we are able to resist sin (our selfishness) and move closer to him. Every person from scripture and every believer who lived and is living is a part of faith. We are all the church.
–OPTIONAL– Have everyone in the room sign each others’ helmets.
Cleanup and close in prayer!
Prayer suggestion: Have everyone share one or two things they wrote on their helmet that gives them faith.
